Ben Martin Quartet
The BJMQ have been playing together for almost a decade and during that time have built an almost telepathic level of communication when improvising. The band take all the major influences in jazz from Trad to Be-Bop, Swing and Free Jazz, Bossa Nova, Hard Bop, Funk and Electronica and meld them into their own special brew, rooted in swing and the blues. They have performed with Kenny Wheeler, Andy Sheppard, Tony Kofi, Jim Mullen, Nigel Price & Tina May as well as pop stars like Lady Gaga & Paul McCartney.
Ben is a "saxophonist of soul and lyricism" according to John Fordham, the Guardian’s jazz critic, and the rest of the band are exciting voices on the national jazz scene. But it’s when they play together that something special happens.
Ben Martin - saxophones
Matthew Ratcliffle - Piano
Martyn Spencer - Double Bass
Andrew 'Woody' Wood - Drums
"Infectious intense fun, a thrilling evening of quality jazz"
"Great to hear a band not afraid to take chances on the bandstand and with the choice of tunes. Never thought I’d hear Billy Rae Cyrus reimagined in a New Orleans style!"

Bleak Expectations (Grantham Dramatic Society)
Leave logic at home and escape with a very silly romp through the Dickensian universe.
Follow half-orphan Pip Bin as he ricochets across Dickensian England, attempting to evade his evil nemesis Mr Gently Benevolent. Can Pip, his sisters Pippa and Poppy, and best friend Harry Biscuit overcome hardship and misfortune to secure their own happy ending?
If you can’t already tell, this is a lovingly ludicrous parody of Charles Dickens, complete with extravagant names, quintessentially British reactions to disaster and heart-fluttering romance.
Based on the award-winning BBC Radio 4 series, this play is fresh from the West End and GDS has secured another regional premiere.

Along the way she bewitches Freddy Eynsford-Hill and convinces a supposed linguistics expert that she is royalty. But, once the wager has been won what is to become of Eliza?

Ian Shaw
Join the multi-award winning jazz singer and entertainer, Ian Shaw, as he presents this very special and intimate concert featuring a selection of his favourite music.
The concert will draw from the rich vein of the Great American Songbook through to cherished contemporary songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie and Stevie Wonder - alongside anecdotes from his life on the road and more. There’ll also be a sprinkling of Shaw’s pithy original lyrics that draw on the quirkiness of the human condition – a satirical take on good living, dodgy politics, as well the perils of yoga at 60(!)
Ian has been a staple on the British jazz scene for over three decades and is widely regarded as one of finest male jazz singers it has produced. Whether performing solo at the piano, or as the special guest with orchestras, he remains the consummate entertainer and his recordings and live performances have been recognised by numerous awards over the years, including ‘Best Male Vocalist’ at the BBC Jazz Awards and also the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.
For more than ten years he has presented the weekly Ronnie Scott’s Radio Show on Jazz FM and has recently added podcasting to his repertoire, with “Not Even Music” now in its third series.
“A brilliant vocal chameleon . . . there’s actually more heart in Ian Shaw’s cleverness than in many singers who wear their hearts conspicuously on their sleeves”

Remember Me To One Who Lives There (Martin Carthy)
An extra-special chance to hear master craftsman Martin Carthy perform and reminisce on his illustrious career in folk song to date, with musical interludes and conversation with his talented friend, musician and journalist, Jon Wilks (Tradfolk). Martin has an insatiable musical curiosity…and a lifetime of wonderful stories and songs to share. There will also be a chance for audiences to ask freely questions of this mighty oak of the English folk tradition. Expect frank and fascinating insights into all manner of subjects…from Scarborough Fair to the Beastie Boys!
82 this year, Martin Carthy is one in a million: one of folk music’s greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. A consummate storyteller, singer, guitarist, oral historian, he is renowned for his settings of traditional songs as well as his authoritative interpretations of newly composed material.
His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it…from Bob Dylan to Billy Bragg.
Martin was a key player in the English folk revival and remains as relevant to stages today as he was in the heyday of Soho folk clubs. Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick, his much-missed wife (the legendary Norma Waterson) and his talented daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums. Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums over the decades…but the great news is that there is a new one in the pipeline, revisiting previously recorded material which has evolved over the years – sometimes radically – to sit more naturally within Martin’s canon of songs.
Jon Wilks is an acclaimed fingerpicking guitarist and singer of traditional folk songs and broadside ballads from the English repertoire, and a devotee of Martin's work. His background as a journalist (a former editor of Time Out magazine and contributor to Dazed & Confused, The Guardian and other publications, as well as the founder of the Tradfolk website) means that he has a great eye/ear for a story. The only thing he anticipates difficulty with is keeping Martin on track. There are so many stories to unearth and track. Expect a different conversation every night.

Simon Evans: Have We Met?
After finally solving the mystery of his existence and true identity in Work of the Devil, Simon finds that he has still not overcome the more daily challenges of remembering what he came upstairs for, who these grown-ups are that live with him (and what they have done with his children?) and how can that footage be from 2009, when he only bought those shoes a few months ago?
“In Greek mythology, the Muses were the daughters of Mnemosyne, goddess of memory - though ironically, there is no easy way to remember her name. But Memory was thus clearly regarded by the ancient Greeks as the mother of the arts, wellspring of inspiration, the compost in which imagination takes rooty. Our last defence against tyranny, the consolation of the just and the seat of the soul. Without memory, the illusion of self crumbles. Mine, however, is shot. So where does that leave me?

The Great Escaper (12A)
12A - 1hr 53
Dir: Oliver Parker UK 2023
With: Michael Caine, Glenda Jackson
In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He had staged a "great escape" from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary. It was a story that captured the imagination of the world as Bernie embodied the defiant, "can-do" spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course, it wasn't the whole story. It was an inspirational but sanitised retelling of one man's need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war. Bernie's adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson) - 'The Great Escaper' celebrates their enduring love but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation.

The Nick Ross Orchestra – the Glenn Miller & Rat Pack Era “In the Christmas Mood”
The lights soften, the mood settles. An audience waits for that first moment of sound. The Big Band is poised, relaxed, but with eyes anxious for the lead. And then, as if giving body to an echo, the murmured notes of ‘Moonlight Serenade’…and the night, it seems, is suddenly full and timeless.
There are those who watch and listen who tap a shy finger to the melodies, others who follow with a silent foot-beat, still others who murmur softly through the lyrics, and those who simply permit a fleeting smile. But common to all are memories.
Recapture the sounds of a bygone era as the Nick Ross Orchestra presents ‘an unmissable evening of music and song’ – the Classic Big Band Sound of the 40s & 50s with a liberal “sprinkling” of very special Christmas Big Band arrangements.

The Silence of Snow
Written & Performed by Mark Farrelly
Directed by Linda Marlowe
Mark Farrelly (Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope, Howerd's End, Jarman) presents his riveting, kinetic solo show portraying one of the great English writers of the inter-war years. Patrick Hamilton was a dazzling success in his twenties, producing hit plays Rope (filmed by Hitchcock) Gaslight (which gave us the modern term 'gaslighting'), and classic novels Hangover Square and The Slaves of Solitude. But Hamilton was also an alcoholic, whose wit darkened as his inner and outer worlds collapsed.
Covering the entire sweep of Hamilton’s thrilling life and writing, The Silence of Snow entertains and challenges, asking: why do so many of us get through life without feeling we ever truly knew another person?
