The musical is set in and around New York City just before and following World War I where Ziegfeld Follies star Fanny Brice awaits the return of her husband from prison, and reflects on their life together. Their story is told as a flashback.

SIMFestival: Children’s Concert ‘The Circus’
This relaxed, interactive 40-minute concert introduces children to chamber music through music from Souvenir de Florence by Tchaikovsky and The Circus by Turina, performed with piano, violins, violas and cellos.
With musical games, playful listening activities, and plenty of imagination, this concert offers a welcoming and informal way to enjoy live music and the concert experience. Rather than ‘dumbing down’ the music, we present fantastic chamber works in a way that invites children to explore, respond, and listen with curiosity, while being treated as thoughtful, engaged listeners.
Led by expert violinist and educator Emma Purslow, this concert is perfect for ages 4–10, though everyone is very welcome.

SIMFestival: Different Trains Late Night
This late-night concert brings together two works written 160 years apart, tracing very different kinds of journeys. From an inward voyage in Schubert to a starkly documented passage through twentieth-century history in Reich.
Franz Schubert’s Fantasie in F minor for piano four hands, D. 940 is among his most searching and emotionally charged works. Beneath its flowing surface lies an extraordinary sense of intimacy and vulnerability, as themes recur and transform in music that feels at once tender, restless and profoundly human.
Steve Reich’s Different Trains (1988) shifts the programme into the soundworld of the late twentieth century. Written for string quartet and recorded speech, the piece reflects Reich’s childhood journeys across America during the Second World War, set against the vastly different train journeys of European Jews at the same time. Urgent, rhythmic and deeply moving, Different Trains has become one of the defining works of late twentieth-century chamber music, and one whose impact is felt with particular force in live performance.

SIMFestival: Dvořák ‘Dumky’ Trio
A programme at the heart of this year’s festival, bringing together driving rhythmic intensity, folk-inspired reflection and richly lyrical chamber writing across the evening.
Jörg Widmann’s 180 Beats per Minute (1993) opens the concert with propulsive energy and razor-sharp intensity. Compressed, urgent and uncompromising, the piece makes its impact in just five exhilarating minutes.
Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor, Op. 90, “Dumky” follows. Structured as a series of contrasting episodes rather than a traditional four-movement form, the trio draws on Slavic folk idioms to create music that alternates between introspection and exuberance, melancholy and joy.
After the interval, Korngold’s String Sextet in D major, Op. 10 brings the evening to a radiant close. Written when the composer was just seventeen, the sextet is remarkable for its confidence, sweeping lyricism and rich harmonic language, combining youthful exuberance with a striking maturity of expression. It is a work that already points towards Korngold’s later successes on both the concert stage and the film screen.

SIMFestival: Late Night Beethoven, String Quartet Op.130
Beethoven’s String Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 130 stands as one of the most searching and innovative works of his late period. Vast in scale and rich in contrast, the quartet moves from moments of lightness to passages of profound introspection.
Its original finale, the Grosse Fuge, pushes the boundaries of form and harmony to their limits. Performed late at night in the historic setting of Browne’s Hospital, one of Stamford’s oldest buildings, with seating for just 70 this concert offers an intense and deeply focused listening experience.
Dates: Fri 22

SIMFestival: Mendelssohn Concerto, Beethoven & Korngold
The festival opens with a programme that welcomes listeners into three days of chamber music, setting out the emotional terrain of the days to come: music that balances wit and warmth, elegance and intensity; music to laugh and cry to.
Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Trio in D major, Op. 9 No. 2 is one of the finest works of his early Vienna years. Joyous to play and to listen to, a fitting open to the 2026 Stamford Music Festival.
Korngold’s Suite, Op. 23, is a compact work of concentrated character, scored for the unusual combination of left-hand piano, two violins and cello. The Groteske and Liedjuxtapose sharply contrasted worlds; biting wit and a sardonic edge giving way to unabashed lyricism, unfolding in the lush harmonies characteristic of Korngold’s style.
After the interval, Felix Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin and Piano in D minor, a rarely performed work written when the composer was still a teenager, closes the evening. Spirited, elegant and full of invention, the concerto shows a young composer already in complete command of ensemble writing, alongside the soaring melodic instinct that would define his later works.

SIMFestival: Much Ado About Nothing Lunchtime

SIMFestival: Tchaikovsky Piano Trio
Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50, subtitled À la mémoire d’un grand artiste, stands among the great Romantic chamber works. Written in memory of Nikolai Rubinstein, the trio combines moments of grandeur with deeply personal expression, shaped by a powerful sense of loss. Its final movement unfolds as an extended set of variations, moving from intimate reflection to passages of almost symphonic breadth.
At the emotional heart of the festival’s final day, the work prepares the ground for the evening’s closing concert, opening out from private remembrance towards the expansive lyricism of Tchaikovsky’s later chamber writing in his sextet Souvenir de Florence.

The Further Adventures of Monsieur Robinet
John Hegley's father was half French (the bottom half), and his comic poet and songster son has continued to dabble in the cross-channel heritage with imaginings in the rotundish shape of Monsieur Maurice Robinet, who is a playful and benevolent influence on both the world and its words (largely English, it should be noted)
John Hegley presents tales about a Frenchman with some unusual [but clean] habits, which include burying his dog’s kennel and his own luggage pieces. The stories appear alongside other new works, which include an address to aliens on the subject of transport, a poem about a non-talking parrot and and the demonstration of cardboard animals.
Deft and daft, the audience are invited to sing along. But not to dance. Much.
