1984 - Stamford Shoestring Theatre 1984
By GEORGE ORWELL
A new adaptation created by ROBERT ICKE and DUNCAN MACMILLAN

‘DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER’

In 2050, a group of historians pore over the diary of ‘Winston Smith’, a records clerk at the Ministry of Truth. Its words are a message to them, a letter to the future from a bygone age.
But one question remains unanswered:
Who is Winston?
In a world of telescreens and thought police, Winston has chosen to rebel. He searches for the truth, falls in love, joins the rebellion of Emmanuel Goldstein. But Big Brother is watching, and the doors of Room 101 can swing open in an instant …
Stamford Shoestring present a fresh adaptation of Orwell’s iconic text, updated for our terrifying post-truth world.
This is an amateur production

Emily Portman Emily Portman is an award-winning singer and songwriter with a passion for traditional songs, hailed as ‘one of the new British folk scene’s most beguiling presences’ (Uncut).
She has toured widely for over 15 years as a band leader, with The Furrow Collective and in a duo with Leveret’s Rob Harbron. Emily was awarded a BBC Folk award for ‘Best Original Song’ and has released three critically acclaimed albums of original songs that recast old ballads and fairytales into new shapes.

After a decade of focusing on collaborative projects, Emily Portman is back with an inspired new solo album of original songs, Dominion of Spells, planned for release in March 2026. Central to the album are themes of midlife metamorphosis and magic. Emily, who was raised in Glastonbury, has a lifelong fascination with folk stories and has been writing otherworldly songs since she was a child.

Her new album tells tales of women encountering challenges and transformations in midlife and embarking on quests to find wonder in a jaded age. Shape-shifting selkies and owl goddesses intertwine with relatable stories of female experience. The songs chronicle Emily’s own midlife experiences, with reflections on motherhood, burnout, the redemptive power of music…and shapeshifting into a werewolf!

Exhibition On Screen: JAMES McNEILL WHISTLER In an era of great change and great beauty emerged the character of James McNeill Whistler. Considered by some to be one of the great innovators of 19th century art, he was a contemporary of the Impressionists, much admired by Van Gogh and Manet. Boldly experimental and famously witty, Whistler disrupted the strict conventions of Victorian society in pursuit of a new cult of beauty, creating “art for art’s sake” and earning himself a place in the history of great art. He found a parallel between painting and music, and entitled many of his paintings “arrangements”, “harmonies” and “nocturnes”, emphasizing the importance of tonal harmony in his work.

His most famous painting, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871), commonly known as Whistler’s Mother, is a revered and often parodied portrait of motherhood. It is arguably one of the most famous paintings in history and this film will unveil the artist behind the art.

Tate Britain is now holding the first major retrospective of Whistler in three decades. This blockbuster exhibition promises to reawaken the world to just how important Whistler is to art history, uniting world-famous masterpieces with rarely seen works. Exhibition on Screen will bring these stunning works and the incredible story behind them to cinemas around the world while the exhibition is still running, bringing this truly global artist to a global audience. This will be an unmissable chance to get to know this visually spectacular artist and the influence he has had on those who followed.
